Charles Darwin Inventions: Scientific Racism?

with 16 comments

Were Charles Darwins’s Greatest Invetions , Racism and Slavery?

It is funny how we have been arguing about Charles Darwins Inventions and his importance to Atheism but we now come to the fact that the man was a racist and an apologist for racial theories.

The fillm goes into histiry of slavery, racism and colonisation and how Charles Darwin gave these movements were given intellectual energy by Darwin and his cousin Sir Francis Galton, the father of Eugenics. Look the theories of Charles Darwin are totally dangerous, Hitler and the other utopian pipe dreams were based on Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution applied to the social field.

  1. That is just so wrong on so many levels…
    1. Kinship does not mean agreement – I have a cousin who is a born again christian, and another who is a republican. That doesn’t make me either.
    2. “Race” in Origin of Species was not referring to human races.
    3. The passage quoted says the civilized peoples will fall to the savage ones – ie white Europeans are complacent, and the “savage” peoples are continually facing challenges, and so are improving beyond the “civilized” peoples.
    4. Darwin was an abolitionist, who believed strongly in the kinship of all humans through common ancestry, exactly the opposite of what is claimed here.
    5. Slavery and racism existed before Darwin. Darwin worked actively against both.
    6. Just because people misrepresented Darwin’s work to justify their own agendas does not invalidate his original work. That’s like blaming Newton and his theory of gravity for ballistic missiles. Actually, calculations for missiles DO use Newton’s laws, while “social Darwinism” has nothing whatever to do with Darwin’s ideas.

  2. What is social darwinism?

Look I have proved it before, Darwin stole the theory from his mystical grandfather Erasmus Darwin. So these ideas were family ideas.

  3. When misguided people think that they are superior to others, and claim that it would be to the benefit of the entire human race to have more people like them, the use the term “Darwinism” to give their faulty ideas merit. That is “social Darwinism”. When bullies try to justify their actions and claim that “the strongest fittest should survive”, it is called “social Darwinism” by people who don’t understand Darwin.
What are you trying to say in your second statement above – that Darwin “stole” the theory of evolution from his grandfather, and is therefore a racist? You lost me there, sorry.

  4. Dawkinswatch,
    Once again you are wrong.
Charles Darwin did not invent slavery or racism as your title above the video suggests. Read the Bible, there is plenty of slavery in there, and I think you know that the bible predates Darwin, unless of course you have some whacked-out conspiracy theory. According to the “Word of God,” any man who happens to have enough money to buy another man is automatically “worthy of all honor,” (1 Tim. 6:1); slaves should seek to fulfill “the will of God” by obediently serving their masters (Eph. 6:5-6); and slaves who endured “suffering” were “acceptable of God” (1 Peter 2:18-20). Therefore, if slaves did not find their masters “worthy of all honor,” disobeyed their masters, and refused to endure suffering imposed on them by their masters, this displeased not only man, but God. God is such a nice guy.
As far as racism goes, that predates Darwin also, for a brief history try this; http://www.geocities.com/ru00ru00/racismhistory/earlyhistory.html
Darwin believed that humans were all one species, that they shared common descent. Also he believed that any racial differences were varieties of the human as a species and emphasized the similarities between people of all races. He did however, and this I think is where you twist things around, call certain cultures “savages”. It was common in his day to believe most other cultures were not as advanced as the European culture. He was only a product of his times in that respect.

Hitler was a misguided lunatic, he had little or no understanding of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. He at times expressed ideas, not from Darwin, but rather from Herbert Spencer’s concept of Social Darwinism, which has little to do with natural selection and served as an addition to his already established religious views. Spencer’s Social Darwinism tried to connect Darwin’s biological theory with the field of social relations.

  5. Look who hired Charles Darwin? These theories had been part religion and pseudo sciences before.

Certain powerful men hired him to expound these ideas.

  8. No seriously, DW, how can you write tripe like this and not be (a) an idiot of tremendous proportions, or (b) intentionally dishonest. Anyone with any knowledge of history of biology (and I’m talking about a really basic list of facts, equivalent to “do you know who Shakespeare is”) knows or is honest about more than you are.

    • Dan this is your standard intolerant response.
I was never aware that Atheists were so abusive. Something in your beliefs tells you that you can bully and abuse those you deem to be mentally inferior to you.
I saw you do it to Troy on another thread, however he is highly intelligent.

Is it your belief in Darwins theory that allows you to demonstrate your intolerance or is it just your natural way of dealing with those who differ in opinion from you?

      • Andrew,
It’s not so much that I’m intolerant of idiots – but I am intolerant of people who steadfastly and proudly remain as ignorant as possible.

  9. “…thank you…”

Is that all you can say? Your wild claims have repeatedly been refuted, you’ve been called moron, imbecile and (I believe) idiot.
I wonder, do you actually read any links provided to you or any responses that are longer than a couple of lines?

  10. Nobody,
What more can he say? He’s such an idiot that he thinks slavery and racism started in 1859! That’s like saying something called ‘warfare’ started following the invention of the machine gun, ignoring all of recorded history. Fact is, slavery and racism are older than written language.

But Mr. Imbecile (DW) here doesn’t know anything worth calling ‘history’, do you Dawkinswatch?

  13. “Slavery existed before but was never justified by racial superiority until eugenics kicked in.”

Yes, idiots will take whatever information they can distort in attempts to make their point. So? The point is that Darwin was not a white supremacist, and would have been horrified to find that people thought his theories justified racism. And you’d know that if you were honest and had actually understood The Origin of Species, if you’ve read that, that is.
